17 Jan Garrett, a Hero

10-year-old Garrett is a hero.  After being hit by a car in May, he made a long recovery at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.

Garrett and his mom spent several months at the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware while Garrett received intensive rehab.

While he has been discharged and able to go back home since, Garrett and his mom travel from Sussex County, Delaware, to stay at the House once a month to attend rehab appointments.

Garrett has shown the bravery of a hero during his recovery, and our friends at the Talleyville Fire Company honored his bravery through their Heroes program. Garrett and his family participated in the Heroes program in December.

The Heroes program is meant to bring joy and sunshine to a child who is facing a medical crisis. Since 2011, the program has helped several children staying at the Ronald McDonald House. For each Hero celebration,  5-15 firefighters volunteer their afternoon to make a special day for the child being celebrated.  The Heroes are made honorary members of the Fire Company, given their own fire helmet and badge, and treated to a ride on the fire truck. They also visit the local Crown Trophy shop where they design and build a trophy to commemorate their special day.

The men and women of the Talleyville Fire Company created the program to honor the bravery of children facing serious medical challenges. The goal of the Hero’s program is to “be able to bring a good day to children who are currently facing more bad days than good.”
